- CMLRev. 2002, p. 188-191 by dr. Lüdwig Krämer:
"The book’s strength is in the almost complete integration of the Court’s case law on
environmental law and the great sovereignty with which Jans masters the huge volume of Community environmental law. He argues with soberness and impressive knowledge and even where one would be inclined to defend another opinion, his reasoning cannot easily be set aside. His language is very plain and clear and should be easily understandable for students. The book can be warmly recommended as a fascinating and impressive presentation of Community environmental law."
- Legal Issues of Economic Integration 2002, p. 109-114 by dr. Han Somsen:
"With European Environmental Law Jans has succeeded in producing an is a book that deserves a place on the shelves of every legal library."
- SEW (Dutch Journal on European Law) 2001, p. 40 by prof. dr. L. Lavrysen:
this book is amongst the best that has been written on European environmental law. Every European environmental lawyer should buy a copy or be able to find it in his library.
- E.L.Rev. (2001) p. 207-208 by Peter Kunzlik:
"All in all this is an outstanding book, a 'must have' treatise both for the European lawyer interested in Community environmental policy and for environmental lawyers
generally."
- Europarecht, 2001, p. 129-130 by Bernhard W. Wegener:
braucht."
- Journal of Environmental Law, 2002, p. 274-275 by Angela Ward:
"European Environmental Law maintains its place as a foundation commentary on EC environmental regulation, and its relationship with national regimes for environmental protection. It remains a 'must have' text for European lawyers with an active interest in environmental issues."
- Europarättslig Tidskrift, 2002, p. 163-165 by prof. Said
Mahmoudi:
"Boken är definitivt oumbärlig för varje jurisdiskt
bibliotek."

- Maastricht Journal of European and Comparative Law 2001, p. 423-424 by A.P. van der Mei:
"Beenen's book contains a detailed and thorough analysis of the relevant case law and legislation. Practitioners, academics, students and others interested in the precise contours of the public service exception, will find all relevant information in the book. [...] [R]eaders are well advised to take notice of Beenen's book. Both the author and the publisher deserve to be complimented. The author is to be applauded for her thorough analysis and clear style of writing, whilst the publisher is to complimented for publishing a 'beautiful' book for a not unreasonable
price.'
- Ars Aequi 2001, p. 822-833 by ND:

- CMLRev 2002, p. 431-432 by dr. Jan Klabbers:
"...in the end, Dr Vanhamme has produced a fine monograph: the work is highly informative, covers a lot of ground, and is written in a pleasant and lucid style without any trace of pomposity. Moreover (and highly to his credit), Mr Vanhamme is not afraid to take a stand; while one might disagree with the particular stand he takes on occasion, his frank views alone already make his study an inspiring work of scholarship. His general thesis, moreover, comes across in convincing manner: the Community is bound by international law (international law even applies in intra-EC matters, unless explicitly ruled out), but the two courts nevertheless do not seem to get overly excited about applying international law (at 334). Anyone wishing to further explore the relationship between Community law and international law, and who can cope with the Dutch language, would do well to consult Dr. Vanhammme’s study.
